Learning from a community garden

Organized by the National Wildlife Federation, the Sacred Grounds Tour of 19 September provided an opportunity to explore the Sacred Grounds native plant garden at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension and learn about native planting, garden care and wildlife.

The tour brought attention to the Sacred Grounds native plant garden, where attendees could examine flowering plants and view garden presentations supported by plant labels and photographs. The garden sign highlights the connection between caring for people and protecting wildlife.

During the outdoor learning experience, participants observed a bee in a clear container and discussed the use of a plant-and- wildlife identification app. These activities offered an opportunity to look more closely at wildlife and explore ways to identify plants and other features of the natural environment.

A garden presentation also covered practical aspects of preparing and maintaining a planting area, including using tarps to help manage weeds, clearing the ground and planting small plants with support from the congregation. The presentation highlighted the continuing care needed to manage weeds and maintain a developing garden.

Through the tour, attendees had an opportunity to hear practical experiences relating to native gardening, site preparation, planting and ongoing maintenance.
